How we work it out

Your estimate comes from a simple calculation, not a black box. Here's what happens in the roughly 60 seconds it takes:

  1. Your SDE

We start with your net profit plus what the business pays you. That's Seller's Discretionary Earnings — the money the business really generates for an owner.

  2. An industry multiple

Every industry sells for a different multiple of that figure. A plumbing business and a cafe aren't valued the same way, so we use a range specific to your type of business.

  3. A few adjustments

We nudge that multiple slightly based on the size of the business, whether revenue is growing or declining, and how dependent it is on you personally.

  4. Your range and Profit Lights

SDE × multiple gives an estimated range — never a single number, since no quick estimate can be that precise — plus up to three Profit Lights explaining what's helping or holding back your valuation.

Question 1 of 6

Total sales before any expenses.

Your net profit as it normally shows up on your books or tax return, after your regular business expenses. If you take money out as draws or distributions rather than a formal salary, that money is already included in this number — don't subtract it. If you pay yourself an actual W2 salary, that's already been deducted like any other wage.

Only fill this in if you pay yourself a formal W2 salary (common for S-corps) — that amount was already subtracted from the net profit you just entered, so we add it back here. If you don't run formal payroll for yourself, enter $0: your net profit already includes everything you've taken out.

Most small businesses: if you're a sole proprietor, in a partnership, or just take money out as draws with no formal payroll, enter $0 here — it's already counted in your net profit.

If instead your business pays you a $70,000 W2 salary, that salary was already deducted as a normal expense. Enter $70,000 here so it gets added back to reflect the full amount available to an owner.
